Julian Casablancas: Phrazes for the Young

I don't know if I entirely understand what's going on here, but I like it.

The Strokes haven't released an album since 2006, but frontman Julian Casablancas has kept busy nonetheless. Whether he's collaborating with Gnarls Barkley mastermind Danger Mouse or the guys from Saturday Night Live, the line "feat. Julian Casablancas" has cropped up regularly on iTunes. And now the garage rock poster boy is branching out on his own with Phrazes for the Young, his debut solo album out this fall.

For those keeping track, that makes him the fourth Stroke to go solo, following guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr., bassist Nikolai Fraiture (Nickel Eye), and drummer Fabrizio Moretti (Little Joy).

Casablancas previews the disc on his website with a short film (watch it below) that cryptically proclaims, "Drunkenness is cowardice. Sobriety is loneliness," alongside a series of zany special effects of city skylines and bee hives. Some futuristic synth music plays in the background.

Casablancas recorded the album's eight songs over the past year with producer Jason Leder (Elvis Costello, Jenny Lewis). The full tracklist hasn't been released, but accoding to Spin.com, titles include "River of Break Lights," "Glass," and "Ludlow St."

Hey...um, not to be pushy or anything, but whatever happened to that new Stokes album that was supposedly in the works? I hear they're stil working on it, but who knows now. Casablancas will be touring to promote his new album, that's for sure, and it's not as if the other members of the Strokes are idly waiting for him.

We'll have to wait and see...

About the new Strokes album, Casablancas said in an interview that the album is coming March/April 2010. Don't worry ;)

Haha thanks for the update. I'm not going to lie - I was worried. That feels so long from now though!

Yea if you go to his website there's a Q&A interview in which he mentions the recording of the new album. Says he'll avoid calling it "their best yet" because everytime they do a record they think that it's the best yet. HA!

Well what are you waiting for. GO!

@ Sharpster7 Haha I saw :) I'm really glad he didn't call it "their best yet" because duh - everyone always says that when they are putting out an album

What do you mean?

What do I mean about which part? The Strokes calling it "their best yet"? I feel like whenever a band comes out with a new album they say it's the best work that they've ever done, even if they don't believe that - so that it will sell. But that's just my opinion.

What else was he supposed to say? It's not as good as the first album but better than the second? Or that they had expected it to turn out differently? That would merely undermine consumer confidence. Aesthetics are subjective; ultimately the fans decide for themselves...

I just think it's something that can go without saying. Like Sharpter7 said, Casablancas "Says he'll avoid calling it "their best yet" because everytime they do a record they think that it's the best yet."
