We Got You Covered: "Kids"

Happy Saturday all! I'm glad to say that for the first time in a very long while I am pretty well rested and enjoying a nice Thanksgiving break!

Now I know that MGMT's "Kids" has been covered by every band, vocalist, and kid in heir basement, but I still love (just about) every single one that I hear. It's pretty hard to screw up the song, whether you make the tempo faster or slower, have a female or a male vocalist, you name it.

So yeah, here's another one. Hopefully this weeks cover song puts you in the same delightful mood that I am right now!

BlakRoc's New Music Video

It's simple, but I still love it!

Funny, the music's just like the music video - they don't need to be flashy to be amazing. They have the talent and the sound, and that's all they need.

Playlist: Busy Busy Bee!

So (per usual) things have unfortunately been a bit hectic for me the past couple of weeks. I figured you all could tell anyway. The busier I am, the less I post.

So with that I bring you a playlist full of songs that make me think of my busy schedule: not sleeping, working, and to just not stop till it's done (what other choice do I have anyway).

"I Will Survive" by Cake
"Work Day" by It Hugs Back
"Get It Done" by Kav
"Don't Slow Down" by Matt & Kim
"Work All Day" (acoustic) by Portugal. The Man
"Let Me Sleep" by The Dead Trees
"No Time, No Hope" by Times New Viking

But yes, from here till the last day of classes (December 11th) it's going to be a bit of a sprint. I'll make it through eventually, but till then don't expect too many updates. I promise that I'll do my best.

We Got You Covered: "Mistaken for Strangers"

I love the National's "Mistaken for Strangers." It's a great song with some great hooks, but something's missing. The track starts with a hollow clanging, and an off the cuff, military style drum patter erupts from nowhere. Although I love Matt Berninger and his voice works for the Joy Division esque song, he lacks emotion.

That's what makes Ian McGlynn's cover so amazing. It showcases the lyrics that are hidden behind a thumping bass and guitar riffs and brings out the true emotion of the song.

Enjoy! Hopefully I'll start having more time for the site soon.

And now back to my paper!

We Got You Covered: "I'll Believe in Anything"

I love Wolf Parade's "I'll Believe in Anything." The vocals are amazing and there is this great energy that comes with the song. I didn't think a cover would be able to do it any justice.

Then Her Space Holiday comes along with a banjo and handclaps - and it works. The grey clouds have been parted and the track transforms into an upbeat singalong.

Seriously, just put it on repeat.

Pirate Radio! Love it!

I'm really excited for this movie! It's about a group of DJs who take to the high seas during the 1960s when the British government banned (yes, banned) rock music from the radio.

The movie comes out November 13th, so it's right around the corner.

Plus the soundtrack is AWESOME. It features David Bowie, The Who, Otis Redding, and more of my favorite classic artists.

It's Been a Year!

So it was exactly one year ago today that I made the first post. And what a year it's been!

I wish I had taken a picture of the site the first day I put it up. A LOT has changed since then.

The community is growing. Every day more people visit the site. I've been seeing more comments, getting more emails, and seeing links back not only on other blogs, but also on band websites and facebook pages, and even an article.

I started Ruined By MTV because I love music and I wanted to share it with my friends. Little did I know (or bother to think) that there would be readers from all over the world reading or bands from all over the world contacting me too.

I was going to make a playlist in honor, but I thought this one song was more appropriate.

It's been an AMAZING year. Let's keep it up! And as always, thanks for reading!
